Review – Zombie Slug Resin Toy

Designer/Resin * Year: 2010

The latest resin toy to hit my mailbox is Zombie Slug (mentioned here), lovingly created by Rusted Halo (blog, Flickr). Priced at $15, this was a lot of resin for a low price, and while it isn’t perfect it’s certainly cute and fun. The mouth more than anything leaps out and grabs me; I just love how deep into the toy the opening goes.

The Zombie Slug Says AHHHHHH!

Just over 3-inches tall, the Zombie Slug’s most distibguishing feature has to be that open mouth. Stretched wide open and painted black inside, the mouth leaps off of the toy and shouts “look at me!” It’s a pretty simple sculpt, but the slug is a clean resin toy without any significant fingerprints or blemishes. It’s not a perfectly smooth work — there is some rough texture across the surface — but what we get is a cute work that’s an excellent value for the price. (Keep in mind that resin toys are hand-crafted and painted, so you’re paying for a work of art; you cannot compare the cost of a resin toy to mass-produced toys.)

The toy is simply painted — without any elaborate washes or masking work — in four colors, but this basic paint app just enhances the toy’s cuteness. Primarily green (as you can see in the pics), it’s possible a little drybrushing work was applied after the green base went on, but I can’t be sure if the subtle shade differences are drybrush work or just areas where the paint wasn’t applied as heavily. However it happened the paint design works well; the completely white eyes give the toy the dead look we expect from zombified creations. And the black of the open mouth really accents the main feature; see the photos above to get an idea just how deep the mouth opening goes into the toy’s body.

Closing Thoughts

Not a lot to say about this one. The price is right, it’s cute, and the toy is a fun addition to my collection of resin toys. It’s not the greatest resin toy in my collection, but it’s another one of those pieces that I never would have thought to create. And when it comes to resin toys I find that what I love most if when something simple and unique comes together in a design I never would have created.

I wouldn’t recommend this as your first resin toy, but if you’re already a resin toy collector then I suggest you hit Rusted Halo’s blog and try to score one of these before they’re all gone. At such a low price you’ll thank me once yours arrives in the mail.

A cute, inexpensive resin toy. I’m looking forward to seeing what Rusted Halo creates next.
