Review – Masters of the Universe Tri-Klops Micro Bust

Line: Masters of the Universe * Manufacturer: NECA * Year: 2004

Over the summer we checked out the Skeletor Micro Bust* (review here) that was just an okay collectible. A great sculpt, as we have come to expect from the Four Horsemen, but issues kept it from being a great statue. But when I ordered Skeletor he wasn’t alone, and now it’s time to pop open the second micro bust that was in the package.

A Better Statue

This Masters of the Universe Tri-Klops Micro Bust* is definitely superior to the Skeletor micro bust, if only because we don’t have an ugly mold line across the figure’s body or head. In fact, it’s actually an excellent micro-statue that, for the price, is a good deal. It’s about 4-inches tall, beautifully sculpted (except for one detail, see below), and the paint apps are adequate and while they don’t drastically improve the statue they don’t detract from it.

A Rough Face

My only complaint with this Tri-Klops is that his face is just a little too chiseled and sharp-edged in places . . . especially the mouth. It’s not horrible, but it’s a minor blemish on an otherwise perfect Tri-Klops sculpt.

And the top part of the head popped off of my Tri-Klops, which is only annoying because rotating it around to face the other eyes forward shows that the head snaps together cleanly just the way it’s shown here. I am pretty sure that some sanding and filing would allow me to spin the top of the head to display another eye, but it’s kinda sad that since the piece was separate anyway it wasn’t designed to rotate. Not a disaster, and as long as the top of the head doesn’t come loose the issue would never even come up.

Closing Thoughts

Not an awesome or amazing Masters of the Universe collectible, this Masters of the Universe Tri-Klops Micro Bust* is acceptable (or excellent, I cannot decide) and likely, as with most micro busts, looks much better in a collection of similar pieces than it does on its own. I do not regret buying this mini statue, but I’m not going to recommend that any Masters of the Universe fan rush out and buy one immediately.

I may say this is an excellent micro statue, but for the size and price I suggest you get your hands on a Tri-Klops action figure instead of this micro bust. Almost any Tri-Klops action figure that has been released in the line makes a better display piece than this statue; in fact, poking around at Amazon makes me think I wanna grab this Snakemen Tri-Klops action figure* and add him to the collection. The price is comparable to the statue, and it looks like the sculpt is every bit as good as the statue.

And that’s just wrong. Statues are supposed to look better than toys. At least that’s my opinion on the matter.

Philip Reed will now place Tri-Klops on the shelf with his other Masters of the Universe collectibles. Hey, he was right. It does look better in a group than it does on its own.
