Review – Marvel Blind-Bagged Mega Bloks Green Goblin

Line: Marvel * Manufacturer: Mega * Year: 2011

We’ve already looked at the Marvel Blind-Bagged Mega Bloks War Machine action figure (review here) and the Battle Damage Iron Man (review here), so now it’s time to get a quick peek at the rarest of the first wave of Marvel Mega Bloks* blind-bagged action figures. But before we do that I need to give a huge thanks to Monster Bot Studios (blog, Twitter) for shipping this toy to me. So, Scott, thank you!

The New Head and Accessories Make the Toy

Since these Mega Bloks minifigs are all basically the same simple design, it’s the extras that really transform the buck into a real character we can recognize. And as the rarest toy in the wave, the designs didn’t hold anything back when they created the Green Goblin. Glider, pumpkin bomb, satchel, and a completely new head sculpt are all excellent additions and looking at this I think it’s only a matter of time before they use all of the parts to give us a Hobgoblin.

But the Glider Has a Problem

There’s a post underneath the glider, but the post doesn’t snap into the included Mega Bloks brick and it does nothing to help the toy stand upright on the glider. All of the photos of the glider-riding Green Goblin that you see here were shot using a transparent piece that the goblin could lean up against. Seriously, this guy does not stand on the glider by himself. And that’s pretty annoying; why couldn’t they have given us a blok that would support the glider/figure in place of the standard 2×4 LEGO-like brick? This is the toy’s one flaw; I mean, the minimal and semi-imperfect paint apps are expected from a toy that costs $2.50 so I’m not gonna stress about that.

So is He Worth Tracking Down?

No, not really. The satchel and pumpkin are great (see the above left photo; the Goblin grabs the post inside the bomb), but that glider has real problems and dramatically decreases the toy’s display value. No effect on fun — you can fly him around just fine — but if you’re a Spider-Man collector you’re gonna need to put some work into figuring out how to get the figure to stand on his glider.

I’m still recommending these to anyone who enjoys blind-packaged toys, but I will say that the Green Goblin is not cool enough that you should buy bag after bag in an attempt to find this guy. He’s just not that cool.

Philip Reed just needs the Venom and he’ll have all eight figures in the wave. Is he stupid enough to keep trying to find that Venom? What do you think?.
