Review – Glyos System Custom Alien Corps by Nistuff

Line: Glyos * Year: 2010

Yesterday we took a quick look at the Glyos-compatible creations of Nistuff (website, Twitter) both past and future (post here). Well, as promised it’s time for a quick review of one of Nistuff’s Glyos System (Onell Design) custom action figures that was released almost a year ago. I got this around the same time as Ben Mininberg’s (blog, Twitter) custom Battle Exellis (review here) but I’ve got no explanation for why it took so long to review this particular custom. Sorry, world, for taking so long to share the toy with you.

Awesome Colors

To be fair, I’m a sucker for any disgusting shade of green so this toy could have been completely painted in that bright lime green and I would have been happy, but the white and lime green accents over the Standard Exellis colorway — combined with the weathering and black detail lines — came together perfectly and really makes this figure pop on the shelf. Overall the paintwork is great, but if I had a single complaint it would be that the green and white work wasn’t continued to the back of the toy. I know I’ll be displaying it face out, but it would have taken the toy to the next level if the back had been given the same attention to detail as the front.

An Original Head

Even though the head was completely created by Nistuff it captures the feel of Matt Doughty’s (Onell Design) sculpting with the various official Glyos System characters so well that the figure fits in nicely with the rest of the series. That noggin is just a slight bit too big for my tastes, but the pumpkin-like nature looks so cool that the more I play with and pose the toy the less the size of the head bothers me.

In fact, the head is so pumpkin-like that I’d love to see Nistuff pull this head out again and release a short run of Halloween-flavored orange custom action figures in October. If that head was painted pumpkin orange with black detail lines and flaming yellow eye sockets it would make a great Halloween design; just add in an orange and black body with a black cloth tunic and you’ve got your tricks and treats all rolled into one!

OFFICIAL NOTICE: If Nistuff takes the bait and creates this custom design then I claim copy #1. Seriously, I’d love to get some Halloween-inspired Glyos System customs on my shelves and this head is just begging to be used in at least one such design.

Closing Thoughts

I know I had a couple of minor issues with the toy, but in the end this is a fun custom action figure and one that makes a great original piece in my Glyos System collection. This may be the only custom that I own by Nistuff, but next month at the New York Comic Con I know I’ll be taking a close look at anything that he has at the show.

Now I sit back and wait for my pumpkin-styled custom to appear. Come on, pumpkin, and spring into existence.

Philip Reed may actually make it to the garage this weekend to get back to his own custom works. The weather seems to have finally cooled enough that it’s not 100+ degrees in the garage at 5 am.

  1. Well, Phil, if you’re that eager for a Halloween-inspired custom, there are already rumblings that the next forum Customized Gift Exchange will have a Halloween-inspired theme. Might just be your chance!

  2. @kranix – Sounds neat. But with all of the travel and work lately I’m trying to avoid any more commitments that are likely to just end in failure on my part. I do wanna see pics of the customs as they appear.

  3. I have to get one of Ni’s customs at NYCC this year cause I missed out on buying one last time (I spent most of my glyos money on axis joint sets LoL). I really like the long-necked guy he makes, although I keep forgetting it’s name. >_<

@Phil- There should be halloween themed Canne'boids at NYCC this year, so you will have that option also for Halloweeny Glyos toys. 😀
