Review – Transformers Insecticon Bombshell Statue

Line: Transformers * Manufacturer: Hard Hero * Year: 2003

Earlier this year I finally scored this Transformers Bombshell Statue*, completing the set of three Insecticon statues that Hard Hero released way back in 2003 (see the Hard Hero site). And even though tracking down the three statues at reasonable prices was a major pain I can say that I’m glad that I put the effort into finding them; this is a great set of statues and it looks amazing on the shelf surrounded by the smaller Insecticon toys.

A Sharp and Angular Sculpt

As you can see in the photos, this 9-inch tall Bombshell statue isn’t exactly comic, cartoon, or toy-based in his design. The colors are wrong and the shapes that create the statue are all wrong, but the overall look is clearly Bombshell and while the details are off and unusual in places the finished piece really does look excellent . . . even if the colors are so very, very wrong. Actually, my only complaint with the statue is that the colors are off (see “Bombshell” at Wikipedia).

Not for Everyone

It took me some time to warm to the idea of statues, and as a relatively recent convert (over the past few years) I can totally understand that not everyone will find this an appealing collectible. But for the Insecticons fans in the audience who enjoy statues I say do everything you can to grab this set. Bombshell here seems to be the easiest to find at a reasonable price (say between $50 and $75), but he was also the hardest for me to get because I kept winning auctions/making purchases and then never getting the statue.

Enjoy the Pics!

There’s not much I can add to what I’ve said that the photos don’t already tell you. This Transformers Bombshell Statue* feels just a little more fragile than some other statues that I own, but that could just be my mind playing tricks on me since I now how annoying it would be to try and replace this. But now that I have this it’s staying in my collection, because as you can see it’s a fun piece and it really is even better as part of the group than on its own.

There really needs to be some time set aside soon for me to photograph all three of the statues together, but while you wait for me to take pictures don’t miss out on this statue. It’s about eight years old and getting tougher and tougher to find, so if you at all like what you see act now before all of the inexpensive options are gone and you’re left looking at the $100 to $200 auctions for this fun statue.

Philip Reed wants more Transformers statues and busts but knows that he has exhausted all of the inexpensive options and can’t decide if it’s worth paying the aftermarket prices for some of the pieces he is missing.
