Review – Glyos System Heavy Armored Rig

The Glyos System Heavy Armored Rig is an update and slightly different version of the basic Glyos System Rig that I’ve reviewed before (first review here, second review here, third review here). And more than just new parts added to an existing toy this particular vinyl work holds a special place in my collection because I was given the opportunity to do more than just collect the toy; you can read about it in this post at the Glyos Transmission Web Log. (For my side of the tale see this battlegrip.com post.)

It’s a Spaceship!

Above you can see two Heavy Armored Rigs in flight, both vinyl toys ready to blast off and fight whatever threat they encounter. The one above is the Relgost Wing Division while the one below is the Experimental Mechanics Division version. If there’s one thing we get with our Glyos System toys it’s a lot of variety and fun in the background and setting of the line. But the Heavy Armored Rig is more than just a spaceship, as our next photo shows . . .

It’s An Armored Suit!

Here the Heavy Armored Rig is in its mecha/walker mode, with the two wings ready to rotate out and start blasting everything in site. The photo below shows the Heavy Armored Rig in its walker/attack configuration; that looks to be like two massive cannons and four smaller blasters; more than enough firepower to deal with almost any opponent we can throw at the vehicle.

Articulation

The Heavy Armored Rig, as a basic Glyos System Rig with the two arms replaced with wings, has the exact same articulation points as the earlier version of the toy. The waist pivots and the two wings rotate around at the “shoulders.” And the arm joints are the smaller Glyos System vinyl joints, so you can pop the wings off and add either Armodoc (first review here, second review here) arms/legs or the original Rig arms. Colors!

The two Heavy Armored Rigs shown here are just a few of the color options that have been released so far; see the official Glyos System Archive for a look at the variety of colors that have been released since the Rig Wing was first revealed last year. And as with other Glyos System vinyl toys most of the color comes from the toy’s plastic; only the panels and tampo prints are colors added after the plastic parts are pulled from the mold.

I Can’t Be Impartial

As you probably guessed, my connection to this toy makes it impossible for me to do anything but love the final version. I’d love to say that I can separate my personal experiences with the creation of the Rig Wing piece, but that would just be lying so instead I’ll direct all of you to this review at It’s All True. And I’ll say that I hope that you guys find the pics shown here useful in getting a feel for the toy.

Closing Thoughts

Durable, playable, and completely customizable — especially if you buy other Glyos System vinyl parts and are willing to cut into your toys (see this video by Vangelus for cutting advice) — the Glyos System Heavy Armored Rig is more than just another designer toy: this is a designer toy that’s designed for fans of building and flying spaceships around the house and attacking unsuspecting targets.

I love this toy. But remember, I am a little more than attached to it so I’m not completely unbiased.

Philip Reed has another idea for a new Glyos System vinyl part. Will anything come of the new idea?

  1. I hope so, I’m digging building with these vinyl pieces and am very curious to see what the next piece you two will collaborate on. I wasn’t huge into the Rig when it 1st came out, I think it was the asymmetrical look to it’s arms that threw me off. When the Rig Wing came out, that was when I needed to get one of these.
