Kickstarter – Legendary Monsters Project Needs Revised

The Legendary Monsters project at Kickstarter now has less than a week to go and Kicktraq is suggesting that the project will fail to meet it’s funding goal. This is unfortunate, because the idea of cryptozoology-inspired toys makes me smile . . . but there are a few flaws with the project that need addressed if it is going to run again and have a chance at success.

  • Shipping – It is a bad idea with a Kickstarter project to not including US shipping in your pledge costs. By making people do the math of adding shipping — hell, making someone even notice they must add shipping separately — you get backers who don’t add the shipping in or just don’t get backers at all. Pledging to a Kickstarter project mustbe as simple as “click this” to get those who have a casual interest in the project.
  • Costs Are Too High – I understand whythe action figures are so pricey, but the average Kickstarter backer doesn’t expect to see a set of four action figures cost $100 (and then shipping on top of that). The cost of buying an action figure through the project must be reduced to snare the casual backers who like the idea.
  • Too Many Toys – Launching with four figures is a cool idea and all, but I strongly suspect this would have a higher chance at success if the project was relaunched and offered only one of the action figures at launch. Take a poll to choose which toy . . . and then use the second favorite as a stretch goal! Presenting and manufacturing just one toy will keep the project clearly easy to follow for casual backers and using other figures as stretch goals will help generate excitement.

I’m no Kickstarter expert, and these are only my opinions, but I have backed and watched enough Kickstarter projects now that I think I have a decent understanding of what does and doesn’t work on Kickstarter. I hope that the Legendary Monsters project at Kickstarter comes back for a third attempt and I hope that, for the monsters, the third time’s the charm.
