Spotted Online – New York Post Reveals Batman and Robin Comic Covers

The New York Post article tells me that someone managing the Batman titles thinks that this is the nineties. This September, DC Comics will publish four Batman and Robin comics with a decimal numbering system: 23.1, 23.2, 23.3, and 23.4. And as if that wasn’t enough, each issue features a gimmick cover! (Yes, the exclamation point was meant to poke fun at this entire event.)

Are sales of the DC titles really so bad that they have to resort to the sort of gimmicks that flooded comic stores back in the nineties? What’s next, will we get a 900 number to call in and vote on whether or not Marvel and DC should dump the gimmick, cross-overs, annual events, and other reasons I skip comics these days and just go back to telling great stories? If so then my vote is to dump every gimmick for a decade and just produce awesome stories.

  1. Ah, the 90’s. The time of holograms, die cut, gatefold, foil, motion, and dozens of alternates…and that was all just on the covers! We haven’t even gotten into polybagging, trading cards, in-issue coupons, mail-aways….Man. I spent a lot of money on comics in the 90’s…..

Did you have any favorite gimmicks at the time?

  2. @Jay – Yeah, you’re right. I like the idea of a villain month. I’m just not a fan of the numbering or gimmick covers; that didn’t work so well twenty years ago.
