Review – Star Wars Jumbo Vintage IG-88

ig88

Hurray for the latest release in the Star Wars Jumbo Vintage series (Amazon.com search*) and the third Empire Strikes Back bounty hunter in the line. After reviews of Boba Fett (review here) and Bossk (review here) — not to mention six other figures in the series — I’ve pretty much given all of you what you need to know about the line. Check those earlier reviews if this one doesn’t give you enough info; IG-88 is basically more of the same!

15-Inches Tall!!!

As with the other action figures in the Star Wars Jumbo Vintage series (Amazon.com search*), IG-88 is a scan and enlargement of the original Kenner Star Wars action figures . . . and that enlargement places this guy at almost 15-inches tall! That’s a lot of bounty hunter, especially since IG-88 is the same price as the other toys in the line, and there’s something unidentifiable and intangible about this line that makes me smile. We’ll call it nostalgia, even though the toys were nothing like this size when I was a kid.

A Totally Unfair Review

I’ll just come out and admit that my review cannot be taken as an objective look at the toy. IG-88 is one of my favorite characters in the Star Wars universe, and when you combine that with my unhealthy love for this action figure series you just know that everything I’m saying can’t be trusted. That won’t stop me from suggesting that you run out right now and find an IG-88 of your own, but I figured I should be honest with you guys. If you want an objective look at this toy I suspect that you’re out of luck; how can anyone not love both IG-88 and the idea of a vintage IG-88 upscaled like this?

Closing Thoughts

I think it’s best that we all focus on the pics and just ignore all of the words written here. IG-88 is an awesome addition to the Star Wars Jumbo Vintage series (Amazon.com search*) and Gentle Giant continues to impress me with the speed — and number of toys! — which which they are getting these on the market. I’m still kicking myself for not getting into the line from Day One, but I am happy to report that I’m staying up with the new releases.

Now to just track down that handful of earlier figures I’m still missing.

  1. I still like Bossk the best, but IG-88 is pretty slick. He’s really very, very cool. I’d love to see a comparison shot with him and the vintage 12 inch IG-88 from ESB.

  2. FINALLY getting caught up on my Battlegrip reading (man, you post a lot!) and saw this. MUST GET. I have no idea how I’m going to work it into the remaining toy/game/thingsmywifetoldmeIshouldn’tbuy budget for 2013, but I will find a way!

  3. @Jay – I hope there aren’t too many posts!

And yes, you must get this IG-88. Just tell your wife that you are using the government funding model and this comes out of your 2014 budget. You’ll be fine.
