Review – Adventure Kartel Johnson

johnsonheader

Today we’re taking a look at another one of the Adventure Kartel series (Amazon.com search*) retailer wave action figures. A slightly different Ankou (see my outdoor shots), Johnson is ready for action in his orange suit and . . . honestly, this is no more than an Ankou in a new color. But look at how awesome he is!

Clamp Hands!

Unlike the Junglevet action figure (review here), the Johnson Ankou toy comes equipped with the original Ankou clamp hands. These open and close nicely and can be used to grab things. Johnson isn’t one for finesse, but if you need a bit of robotic brute force and something held in place these clamp hands can do the job wonderfully.

Heavy Weathering

Like almost every Adventure Kartel (Amazon.com search*) action figure out there Johnson, especially his jumpsuit, is beaten, abused, and has clearly been out in the elements. What I really appreciate, though, is that the heavy oil stench isn’t as strong with Johnson as I’ve encountered with other 3A action figures. I love the dirty look, but when playing with toys starts to give you a headache you know the smell is a tad too strong.

Another Review

There’s not a lot I can say about Johnson because he is an already-existing action figure which is built on a body I’ve already reviewed. But I can direct you at a review by Ben Mininberg (blog, Twitter) over at CollectionDX — CollectionDX Johnson review here) — where Ben rightly says:

Johnson’s a pretty simple figure, but he has style and is a lot of fun. The AK retail figures are $90 each, and that lines up to a pretty good deal among 1/6 figures. He’s fully painted, extra posable, and comes with a highly detailed costume. The working clamps and moving eye make for a goofy classic sci-fi feeling robot with a modern flair. He makes a great gateway figure to the AK line, and works just as well as a standalone 12″ robot man.

While not as awesome as either the Junglevet (review here) or Dropcloth (review here) action figures, Johnson is a lot of fun and might be one of the easier Ankou toys to find. Recommended if you’re a collector of 12-inch scale action figures and if you’re a fan of robot toys. He’s almost more man-machine than pure machine, but Johnson looks great, stands well, and looks amazing with all of the other 12-inch scale 3A action figures in my collection.
