Alien ReAction Action Figures Shipping Before Christmas!

Super7 has announced that the Kenner-style 3.75-inch scale Alien ReAction action figures are shipping soon and may start reaching us before Christmas. Many of us have been looking forward to this line since ReAction was announced in 2012, and seeing these are almost shipped has to have several people excited to see what the toys look like in hand.

Now a lot of what’s driving the excitement is nostalgia, but the fact that both Hasbro and Mattel have started pushing five point articulation action figures over the last twelve to eighteen months tells me that this style of toy is only going to become more popular soon enough. Awesome news for kids if Hasbro and Mattel can keep the price down, and great news for adult collectors if enough classic lines get recreated/reimagined in this style.

If you haven’t yet pre-ordered this series you can find them at Amok Time, Big Bad Toy Store, and Entertainment Earth* for $65 for the set of five. I (and everyone else who pre-ordered at SDCC) paid $100, but Super7 has said that there’s a bonus mystery figure so once we know what that is I’m sure the internet will start buzzing. I’m hoping for a glow-in-the-dark Alien action figure.

Or perhaps Kane, with chestbursting action!

  2. While I think using the simplified, detail-minimal style and 5 POA of the vintage Star Wars line is a brilliant concept for the adult collector market, Hasbro’s new 5 POA figures don’t mesh well stylistically because they have more detailed, modern sculpts (at least in my opinion – they look like modern figures, just with fewer points of articulation).

What Hasbro should consider doing are new vintage-style figures with more screen-accurate colors and sculpting, but still matching the minimalist style of the ReAction figures. (Most) kids would likely be fine with them (young Poe wouldn’t have been if he’d known better-articulated versions existed, but perhaps young Poe was unusual), but adult collectors would be pleased with the synergy with the ReAction line.

I’m still surprised by how few toy companies seem to appreciate the value of scale and style compatibility across inter-company figure lines. It’s a huge draw for many collectors.
