Review – Masters of the Universe ‘Toon Tumblers

tumblers

I’ve mentioned before that Gina and I collect glasses, and once I saw these Masters of the Universe ‘Toon Tumblers I just had to order them for our collection of illustrated glassware. The set of four glasses was a little pricey, but compared to what we have paid for some really cool vintage glasses (the Uno glasses we found are especially fun) $10 to $15 per glass isn’t terrible.

Skeletor and Beast Man

First up are the two evil glasses in the set, Skeletor and Beast Man, and right away you can see that the glasses are illustrated using classic eighties artwork. I feel like I would have preferred modern artwork over the retro art, but then when I think about it this eighties art just makes the glasses feel like they came from a 1985 fast food promotion . . . so this is actually better! Just looking at these I can imagine that they were bought at a Burger King in the mid-eighties.

He-Man and Teela

Looking at the eighties-inspired He-Man artwork really drives home how much Mattel has changed the character in the last three decades. Today’s He-Man has a touch more “barbarian warrior” going for him, but it’s still fun to be reminded of where the character started. The artwork on all four glasses is sharp and nicely-applied, but since these are decorative pieces in a display case I cannot say how the glasses would perform after use and washing. Why would I drink from my artwork? That’s insane!

Closing Thoughts

I understand that not everyone out there collects illustrated glasses, but I can see where the Masters of the Universe ‘Toon Tumblers would make a fun gift for a Masters of the Universe fan. These are just off the action figure path enough to be a little strange, but not a rarity or difficult item to find, meaning they’re good for birthdays or holidays.

But there’s no need to buy me a set. As you can see, I already took care of that. (Which just feeds into Gina’s frustration with trying to buy my presents. Sorry.)
