Episode III – The Unlove for Star Wars Black Leia and Greedo Action Figures

Further documenting the peg warming status of the Star Wars Black series (Amazon.com search*) comes these two pics I shot in an Austin Target. Here we see four Princess Leia and three Greedo action figures . . . and not a single Han Solo or Boba Fett.

A sight far more common than any of us like to see. Hasbro, your case packing plan needs work!

Now this isn’t the first time I’ve run across these figures, but I can probably count on two hands the number of Han Solo and Boba Fett toys I’ve seen in stores . . . and that’s only after traveling around the country and looking in various ToysRUs and Targets. Something about this line isn’t working.

One nice thing is the package design allows us to identify the toys without removing them from the pegs. As we can see, few people ever take these from the pegs.

Hasbro, the quality of the toy has no value if you cannot figure out how to properly pack those cases with toys that sell! Please bring back Boba Fett in a wave immediately, help your retailers clear out the unwanted Leia and Greedo action figures, and save this line before the mass retailers grow tired of your peg warmers and ditch the entire line.

  1. Was literally just a Target over lunch (picking up the JLA Target exclusive DVD) and I took a look at the Star Wars Black selection and it was identical to the picture above. A full peg of Greedos and a full peg of Slave Leias with 1 Han tucked away in the back.

  2. This has to be a regional thing, because I’ve only seen 2 Leias at retail, and one of them hasn’t sold because it has bad paint deco on her face. Hans and Greedos are fairly easy to find.

I do think Hasbro needs to rethink how it does case packs for this line. The one of each doesn’t work too well at this price point.

  3. Yeah, this really makes me nervous for the continuation of the line. I really want all of the Bounty Hunters from Empire Strikes Back. Seeing Greedo everywhere doesn’t bode well for other Bounty Hunters or even EU characters (Sith Lords anyone?). On the plus side, I don’t see any Greedos on the pegs in my area. To be fair, though, I don’t see many SWB figs in general now. You’d think the Chicago suburbs would restock their toys after the holidays. They’re still nice and empty.

  4. Meandering Thoughts:

I visited my local Toys r Us (near Toledo, Ohio) the other day and only found two Leias, two Greedos, and a Luke. I looked in the toy section of a Walmart close by, and only found the 3 3/4 inch figures, and I’m not sure if that Walmart even bothered carrying the 6 inch figures. I’m only vaguely interested in either the sandtrooper, or the stormtrooper (if released), but only out of sentimentality–the stormtrooper was the first figure I owned from the ’77 line, and I always play stormtrooper in the Battlefront games. I really don’t pay too much attention to the line. And because it’s Star Wars, and it’s never really gone away, there’s this sense of returning to the well one more time, and I’m really not too enthused. I believe that toys are tools to stimulate the imagination, and, while I recognize one’s mileage may vary, for me, these figures are something of a dead battery. My inner six-year old whines, “it’s Star Wars….again?”

At that Toys r Us that day, I actually picked up and looked at one of the Leias for the first time. I’ve never been a fan of of that particular outfit (or lack thereof). I noticed that the eyes on that particular figure were painted in such a way that in conjunction with that state of undress, the face suggested the fearful anticipation of some ugly fate–it occured to me this figure might as well been called “Victimized Leia,” and I became very uncomfortable.

I’ve read it suggested that perhaps this figure this might have sold better if it had come with a Salacious Crumb figure–to additionally torment Leia, perhaps (no, I do know about the rumors of a Jabba the Hutt set), but I think that’s the wrong tack. I’m not sure if the classic white outfit would be deemed interesting enough by fans, though it’d be a step in the right direction.

The franchise is called Star Wars, and this title promises action. At one point in the three films Leia was geared up in commando fatigues, ready for combat, and she succeeded all right. So why couldn’t the character be presented as a more assertive action hero? And would a more heroic, more battle-ready, more dynamic figure not sell better?

  5. I have to agree with you, just because 1 TRU, has 1 Greedo does not equate to the wave selling great. There is no telling of how long that lone Greedo was there.

I’ve been on an endless quest for Boba, and the 3 Targets & 2 TRU’s I’ve searched; they’ve only had Greedo & Leia

At the TRU I visited yesterday: 3 Greedo & 3 Leia
    & Target: 2 Greedo & 1 Leia
