“Don’t Even Need Batteries!”

This 1987 commercial for Starcom makes me think that one of the things we’re all missing in our lives is more little starships and action figures. But what I most want to mention is how watching this commercial led me to the Future War Stories blog where this quote caught my eye:

“It seemed like during the Reagan 80’s that every toy marker was after your parents’ bucks with a two-fold campaign of the toys and the extended commericals, or also-known-as, the Saturday morning cartoons like Transformers, G.I. Joe, Robotech, Gobots, Captain Power…and so on.”

It’s amazing how stuff like this exists all around me and never really captures my attention . . . until I start working on a project that’s directly related. I’m no scientist or expert, but I’m guessing that our subconscious mind absorbs way more info than we realize. Good thing I’ve got a big head to store so many oddities!

  1. I never got into Starcom, but I really like their “sister” line Xpanders. I had a couple of them when I was young, they got destroyed by my nephews about 10 years ago, and I’ve been trying to rebuild that collection ever since. It’s surprisingly hard to get them at a decent price now.

  2. This can count as a comment on your earlier Star Bird post as well–YES we need more toy spaceships! It’s sad that we only get retreads of licensed properties. And when we do get new IPs, the ships are lackluster.

Where are all the off-brand scifi toys?!!
