ROM Ad from 1979
The Rom comic from Marvel would have never come into existence if not for Parker Brothers taking a stab at creating an action figure. This Rom ad from a 1979 issue of Shogun Warriors may look great, but reportedly sales of the toy were weak. What I find interesting is that sales of 200,000 to 300,000 Rom action figures was considered a failure (see Wikipedia); how many toymakers today would love to sell 200,000 to 300,000 of a new action figure?
