1984 Playbots from Sound & Design Imports

Way back in 2010 I reviewed the Moto-Bot Pick-Up cheap transforming robot toy from 1984. Released by Intex, the Moto-Bot line was created to capitalize on the popularity of Transformers and GoBots toys at the time . . . and it wasn’t the Pick-Up toy wasn’t at all alone on shelves. For example, this Playbots robot from 1984 was right there and ready to confuse the parents and grandparents of the time.

As you can see by the pics, both the Moto-Bots toy and this Playbots toy are from the exact same mold. Even the stickers are very similar with only a few variations between the two designs. I’ve no reason to suspect that one is a bootleg of the other; both toys were made in Macau and were most likely produced and sold under license to two different US distributors/toymakers.

Enjoy the pics, and definitely do not miss my Moto-Bots Pick-Up review for a much closer look at the design. I’m undecided as to whether or not I’ll actually open this Playbots toy. I think that since it’s identical in design to the Moto-Bots toy it may be best to leave the toy sealed and display it in the package.

Everyone out there has a collection of cheap transforming robot toys from the eighties, right?
