Jim Starlin’s “Rampaging Hulk” #4 Cover from 1977

Yesterday, at a Waco bookstore, I ran across a few issues of Marvel’s 1977 Rampaging Hulk magazine. The price was super low, which meant that the magazines just had to come home with me. These are great fun to flip through — I’m sure some Marvel historian out there will let us know when Marvel put an end to these black & white comics magazines — and the Jim Starlin covers are absolutely fantastic.

As proof of the cover fantasticness I offer up this work:

Seriously, how awesome is that? You could get these classic stories in the Essential Rampaging Hulk* collection, but then you would be missing out completely on the newsprint and magazine feel of the books.

And now I’m left wondering if anyone is publishing black & white comics magazines today . . .

  1. It looks like Marvel stopped their Punisher (black & white) Magazine in 1990. I don’t know if there were any past that, that was the only one my local book store carried regularly.
