Over the last few days, and during yesterday’s flights home, I’ve been reading The Glass Cage: Automation and Us*. This book is far from a light read, but Nicholas Carr’s look at how computers and robots — automation — affect our lives is so very fun that I’m finding it sparking dozens of new ideas. How robot cars will react to deadly situations, commercial airline pilots spend only a few moments each flight actually flying the plane, and whether or not the Roomba murders and extinguishes life are just a few of the ideas covered in the book.

I’m still reading through it, but if you’re interested in what our near-future could look like then The Glass Cage: Automation and Us* is worth grabbing. Think about the dramatic changes over the last five and ten years . . . and then ask yourself if you’re prepared for what’s next.

In The Glass Cage, best-selling author Nicholas Carr digs behind the headlines about factory robots and self-driving cars, wearable computers and digitized medicine, as he explores the hidden costs of granting software dominion over our work and our leisure. Even as they bring ease to our lives, these programs are stealing something essential from us.
