1996 “Body-Rigs” in Inspired: The Unauthorized Guide to Kenner Star Wars Mini-Rigs

Yesterday, in my first post sharing information on a book project devoted to Kenner’s classic Star Wars Mini-Rigs, reader Barbecue17 (blog) asked:

Are you going to devote any space to the POTF two deluxe figures like Crowd Control Stormtrooper and the concept stuff like the Airspeeder and Cloud Car?

Absolutely, but not too much space will be devoted to those toys. How much space? Well, this two-page spread featuring the four 1996 Star Wars Deluxe Figures — those body-rig like vehicle plus action figure packs — should give everyone a very good idea of just how much space I plan to spend in the book on the non-eighties Star Wars toys that are distant relatives of Mini-Rigs.

I’m still in need of any special advertising materials, concepts, prototypes, packaging mockups, or anything else about the eighties mini-rigs and body-rigs that you feel would assist me in assembling this book. If you have anything at all you feel I need (and that you can contribute) please see both the first post and the battlegrip.com contact page . . . and let’s talk.

No one person can assemble everything that could make this book truly remarkable, so any contributions at all would be appreciated. I hope that these sample pages (and those shown earlier) demonstrate what I am attempting. And, with luck, enough special contributions will appear to bulk the book up beyond my initial size estimate and make this a volume that all of us refer to for years to come.

  1. Makes sense to keep limit coverage on the 90s vehicles if the book’s main conceit is the 80s/Kenner line. Though a comprehensive look at how mini rigs have evolved–into the newer lines from Hasbro from the last few years–would be cool too. But that might not be book material so much as fodder for the blog?

(These are just rambling thoughts, you understand. I’m by no means suggesting you should do one or the other!)

    1. @Jay – Yeah, if I’m not careful this could explode to be unworkable. I am toying with a similar two-page spread for the modern Hasbro “mini-rigs.” But definitely nothing as detailed as I’m aiming for with the eighties toys.

  2. Awesome job so far!!!! Definitely interested in buying this book when it becomes available or supporting it if it goes to Kickstarter. Always loved these smaller vehicles/mini-rigs.

  3. @The Rook – Thanks! I ran through a few different designs for the pages before landing on this. And I’m liking the look enough that I think (other than minor tweaks) this is how the final pages will look.

I’ll know more once I finish a complete section for one of the toys.
