Hot Wheels Firebird Funny Car Advertisement from Muppet Magazine in 1983

This Muppet Magazine advertisement from 1983 is surprisingly specific; it promotes a single one of Mattel’s many Hot Wheels toy cars. I find it odd that they focused on one car rather than showing off all of the new cars for 1983, but the success of Hot Wheels over the years shows that this ad approach is just fine and likely did its job and made kids want this car . . . and many more.

  1. I have this car and it’s been on my desk a lot in recent years – I got it when I was a kid in, you guessed it, around 1983. I remembered being enamored with the opening feature. I was 4, what do you want from me?

    1. @Adam16bit – I am surprised at the number of responses around the web were basically “I remember this one!” I guess Mattel knew exactly what they were doing in promoting just this single car in a magazine ad.
