Kenner’s Alien in the 1980 Kenner Trade Catalog
Over the weekend I shared a Strawberry Shortcake carrying case from Kenner’s 1980 catalog (posted here) and now it’s time for another classic toy: Kenner’s Alien giant action figure!!! There are many Alien action figures these days (find at Amazon.com*), but Kenner’s Alien toyline back when the movie first launched made almost no sense at all. How many parents want to buy toys from an R-rated movie for their kids? At the time, not many at all.

My mom bought me the Alien back when it came out because she thought it would freak out our neighbor. She also bought me Gre-Gory the Vampire Bat for the same reason. I guess I really benefited from my mom being a total weirdo. In the spring of ’82, we moved away, and my Alien was left behind at a friend’s. I’ve wanted that toy so badly for all these years. Sadly it’s well out of my price range. I recently bought the new NECA 22″ Big Chap to fill the void, but nothing will ever come close to that glow-in-the-dark paint and vac metal teeth! I contacted NECA and suggested they release their Big Chap in those retro Kenner colors. Hopefully they think it’s a good idea, too!

It’s a really accurate toy, but nothing will ever beat the glow-in-the-dark paint and vac metal teeth of the Kenner toy. I contacted NECA and suggested they re-release their Alien in a retro Keener paint scheme. Hopefully they also think it’s a good idea!

I can only imagine how awesome it would have been to have had this as a kid. It seems like one of those toys that would have become legend, with one kid claiming his cousin’s friend had a toy from Alien and no one really believing it ever existed.
