LJN Dungeons & Dragons 1983 Newspaper Advertisement

It has been over three years since I wrote about the Dungeons & Dragons toys from LJN (feature posted here), and in that time I still haven’t been able to just go out and buy a book devoted to these toys. Come on, world, and get it together. I shouldn’t have to ask for that book to exist because it should simply be there for all of us to enjoy.

For such a book to be really incredible it would have to include old advertisements, and that’s where this 1983 newspaper ad from Fred Meyer stores enters the picture. Fortress of Fangs playset advertised in a newspaper? Holy hell the eighties were awesome!

  1. “Holy hell the eighties were awesome!”
YES, YES THEY WERE! Back then, you could have fearsome playsets that dripped with explosive plastic battle-might. Today, the Fortress of Fangs would have buck teeth and a goofy grin, amidst the whining, wheezing, limp lamentations that boys are being taught too much aggression through militant toys. In the eighties, however, this playset would laugh at such simian simpering as the jaws of doom chomp down on mail-clad heroes with a soundtrack of electric guitars screaming!

  2. Phil, I think we all know that there’s only one person capable of putting out the awesome book of which you speak…. 😉

P.S. I’m happy to dig out some of my old figures for photographing!
