Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire Collectibles

There was more to the Shadows of the Empire (Amazon.com search*) launch in 1996 than just the Kenner action figures and vehicles. While I may have already mentioned the toys (see “Kenner’s 1996 Star Wars Action Figures Were Awesome”) and even reviewed one of the toys (Swoop review here) there were also other toys, small statues, a Halloween mask, and even a sourcebook for the West End Games Star Wars roleplaying game.

In fact, Lucasfilm pushed Shadows of the Empire so hard that issue seven of Topps’ Star Wars Galaxy magazine (Amazon.com search*) was a Shadows of the Empire special issue. A preview of the novel, a sneak peek at the comic, and even a discussion of the soundtrack created for the event packed the magazine.

But there was more to the magazine than only the fiction experience, as these pages from the magazine demonstrate. Titled “Shadows on the Shelves,” the article attempted to educate all of us on the stuff that we could buy . . . though I find it a little funny that so much of the focus of the article — and so many of the images! — was on Kenner’s Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire line. It kinda makes me wonder how vital the action figures and toys are to the Star Wars machine.

Anyway, click the images for a closer look at the article and enjoy this peek at 1996.
