In celebration of the upcoming G.I. Joe: Silent Interlude 30th Anniversary Edition* hardcover, Comic Book Resources has posted an interview with Larry Hama, asking the writer/artist all about the creation of this classic G.I. Joe comic book.

“I forgot how the thing happened, but we needed an issue right away. I told Denny [O’Neil, the book’s editor] if I wrote and drew at the same time we could cut out a lot of time. And then I had the idea to do a silent issue and eliminate the week it would take to get it lettered.”

Deadlines really can spark creativity and inspire ideas that normally would have never happened. The interview just scratches the surface of the story, though, because Hama has written some commentary for the hardcover edition and I’m certain that his (often) brief answers to the interview questions was so that he wouldn’t give away some of the revelations in the book. I’m looking forward to this one; hardcover, plus commentary, plus original page layouts means this should be a real treat once it arrives.
