Marvel + Nabisco in 1994

A 1994 issue of X-Men was keeping this Nabisco ad safe inside so that two decades later we could all enjoy it. These four tins were part of the Fox animated promotion, and seeing these has me now wondering why I didn’t watch these cartoons all that often when they were on Fox back in the nineties. I think I was just too busy with work at the time, but maybe it’s just that the cartoons weren’t actually all that good.

Still, regardless of why I missed the cartoons I can say this is a fun ad and those tins look pretty neat. I especially love that Iron Man suit design. We need a return of that suit!

  1. You didn’t miss much concerning the X-Men cartoon. I was a huge X-Men nerd at the time and wouldn’t watch it at all. I remember the animation being sub-par; especially when compared to the Batman Animated Series at the time. It always looked too bright and washed out too.

  2. The X-men cartoon was quite good actually–fairly faithful to the comic storylines (not just random stories with the characters). Like any show, some episodes were hit others were misses. But they did the Dark Phoenix saga, Age of Apocalypse, and the Starjammers–which is pretty amazing actually!

Style wise, the animation was more ragged than Batman (Really, we’re comparing them to BAS–the GOLD standard of animated superhero shows?!), but it’s a worthy effort if you can get around to watching them.

  3. I had that Iron Man tin! I didn’t remember where it came from, but it’s still in a box somewhere.
I didn’t see the actual dimensions note when I decided I wanted one, so when I was a kid I was expecting it to be a lot bigger.

  4. @ShenaniTims and Jay – Awesome, two very different views on the X-Men cartoon. Fight!!! I probably won’t bother tracking down the cartoons; and yeah, comparing anything to BTAS is unfair. That cartoon still stands out as a masterpiece two decades after it hit the air.
